Start with the basics
A good routine does not need ten products. For most people, four steps cover what the skin needs: cleanse, moisturize, protect in the morning, and treat at night if desired.
Morning routine
Keep the morning short and focused on protection.
- Cleanse with a gentle cleanser, or just rinse with water if your skin is dry.
- Moisturize with a lotion or gel that suits your skin type.
- Apply sunscreen as the final step, every day, even when it is cloudy. Reapply if you spend long periods outdoors.
Evening routine
Night is when you remove the day and, if you want, use treatments.
- Remove sunscreen and makeup first. An oil or balm cleanser works well, followed by a regular cleanser.
- Apply a treatment such as a serum, if you use one.
- Finish with a moisturizer to support the skin barrier.
Choosing by skin type
Dry skin usually does best with creamier textures and ingredients like glycerin and ceramides. Oily skin often prefers lightweight gels and non-greasy lotions. Sensitive skin benefits from short ingredient lists and fewer fragranced products. Combination skin can use a light moisturizer all over and richer products only on dry areas.
Add one product at a time
When you want to add something new, introduce a single product and use it for two to four weeks before adding another. If your skin reacts, you will know which product caused it. Be consistent: most products need weeks, not days, to show results.
