Shine sprays and sleek-finish sprays
These products add slip and shine to the surface of the hair. Use a light mist on dry or damp hair, holding the can about a foot away. Start with a small amount, because too much can leave hair weighed down or greasy.
Multitasking leave-in sprays
Leave-in sprays aim to detangle, add moisture and protect against heat in one step. They work best on damp hair after washing. Comb them through from mid-lengths to ends. Check the label to see if the product offers heat protection before using hot tools.
Brushes and tools
A set of brushes lets you use the right tool for the job: a wide-tooth or paddle brush for detangling, a round brush for blow-drying volume, and a smaller brush for smoothing flyaways. Remove trapped hair from brushes regularly and wash them every couple of weeks.
Avoiding buildup
- Use a clarifying shampoo about once a month if your hair feels coated.
- Apply products to the lengths and ends, not the scalp.
- Rinse out heavy products before sleeping when you can.
- Use less than you think you need and add more only if necessary.
