Wash based on your scalp, not a rule
There is no single right number of washes per week. Oily scalps often need washing every day or two. Dry or curly hair may do well with once or twice a week. If your scalp feels itchy or greasy, wash more. If your hair feels brittle and dry, wash less.
Choosing shampoo and conditioner
Shampoo is mainly for the scalp, so choose one that matches your scalp type. Conditioner is mainly for the lengths and ends, so choose one that matches your hair texture and dryness. Apply shampoo at the roots and let the rinse clean the lengths. Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths down.
Reduce breakage
- Detangle gently from the ends upward, ideally with a wide-tooth comb.
- Pat hair dry with a soft towel or old t-shirt instead of rubbing.
- Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the roots every day.
- Trim the ends regularly, about every two to three months, to remove splits.
Go easy on heat
Heat tools can weaken hair over time. Use a heat protectant, choose the lowest temperature that works, and give your hair days off. Air drying when you can is the simplest way to cut down on damage.
When to see a professional
Sudden hair loss, patches of thinning, or a persistently itchy and flaky scalp can have medical causes. See a doctor or dermatologist rather than only changing products.
