What it does
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it attracts and holds water. In a serum it helps skin look plumper and feel more hydrated. It does not add oil, so most skin types can use it, including oily and sensitive skin.
Apply it to damp skin
Because hyaluronic acid pulls in water, it works best on slightly damp skin. After cleansing, leave your face a little damp, apply a few drops, then seal it in with a moisturizer. In very dry air, using it on dry skin without a moisturizer can leave the skin feeling tight.
Where it fits in a routine
- Morning: cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.
- Night: cleanser, serum, moisturizer.
- Apply thinner products first and thicker ones after.
Things to know
Start with every other day if your skin is sensitive, and stop use if you see irritation. Check the ingredient list for fragrance or other things you avoid. If you have a skin condition, ask a dermatologist before adding new products.
