Heat, light and moisture are the enemies
Most beauty products last longer when kept in a cool, dry, dark place. A bathroom shelf near the shower is convenient, but the heat and humidity can break down active ingredients and encourage bacteria growth. A bedroom drawer or cabinet is often a better home.
Look for the period-after-opening symbol
Many products show a small open jar icon with a number and the letter M, such as 12M. It means the product is intended to be used within that many months after opening. Write the opening date on the package with a marker so you remember.
Signs a product has gone bad
- A change in smell, such as a sour or sharp odor.
- Separation, clumping or a changed texture.
- A change in color.
- Skin irritation that did not happen before with the same product.
Keep things clean
Wash your hands before dipping into jars, or use a clean spatula. Close lids tightly after each use. Clean makeup brushes and sponges regularly, and do not share eye products. Replace mascara every few months to lower the risk of eye infections.
Special cases
Sunscreen can lose effectiveness in heat, so do not leave it in a hot car. Vitamin C serums and retinoids often come in dark or airless packaging because light and air degrade them, so keep them tightly closed. Natural products with fewer preservatives may have a shorter shelf life.
