Makeup Basics: Choosing Lipstick, Eyeliner and Removers

How to pick shades, make eyeliner and lip color last, and remove makeup gently at the end of the day.

Choosing a lipstick shade

Look at the undertone of your skin. Warm undertones often suit coral, brick and terracotta shades. Cool undertones often suit berry, blue-red and rose shades. If you are unsure, swatch on your fingertip or inner wrist rather than the back of your hand. Liquid matte formulas last longer but can feel drying, so apply lip balm first and let it absorb.

Making lip color last

  • Exfoliate gently if your lips are flaking.
  • Apply a thin layer, blot with a tissue, then apply a second layer.
  • Use a lip liner to define the edge and help prevent feathering.
  • Keep a small mirror and tissue nearby for touch-ups.

Eyeliner tips

Waterproof pencil eyeliners are good for people with watery eyes or humid weather. Sharpen the pencil before use for a cleaner line and warm the tip against the back of your hand so it glides. Start at the center of the lash line and work outward. Replace eye products regularly and never share them.

Removing makeup properly

Waterproof formulas need an oil-based or dedicated remover. Press a soaked wipe or pad on the eye for a few seconds before wiping, so you do not tug at delicate skin. Follow with your normal cleanser and moisturizer. Check wipe ingredients if you have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses.
