Kitchen Organization Ideas for Small Spaces

Practical ways to use hanging baskets, sink organizers and drying racks to get more from a small kitchen.

Use vertical space first

When counters are limited, look up and to the sides. Hanging baskets keep produce, onions and small items off the counter while letting air circulate. Wall hooks and rails can hold utensils and mugs.

Organize around the sink

The sink area gets crowded quickly. An over-sink dish drying rack frees counter space by using the sink itself. A strainer basket catches food scraps and keeps drains clear. Stainless steel is a good choice for these items because it resists rust and wipes clean.

Group by how you cook

Store things together by task. Keep cooking oils, salt and spices near the stove. Keep cutting boards and knives near your prep area. Use a spray bottle for oil so you use less and can reach it easily.

  • Put daily items at eye level.
  • Keep rarely used items on high shelves.
  • Use clear containers so you can see what is inside.
  • Label anything you decant.

Declutter regularly

Once every few months, remove duplicate items, expired food and gadgets you never use. A smaller number of well-placed items is easier to keep tidy than a full cabinet.
