What to Know Before Buying Supplements Online

How to read supplement labels, look for third-party testing and decide whether a product is right for you.

Read the supplement facts panel

Check the serving size, the amount per serving, and the number of servings in the container. Divide the price by the number of servings to compare products fairly. Look at the other ingredients as well, in case you avoid certain additives or allergens.

Look for third-party testing

Supplements are not tested before sale in the same way as medicines. Seals from independent testing groups can show that a product was checked for purity and label accuracy. Where a brand lists testing, look for the details.

Creatine as an example

Creatine monohydrate is one of the most studied sports supplements. Micronized powder has smaller particles and mixes more easily in liquid. Products usually give a daily serving size on the label. People with kidney problems or on medication should speak to a doctor first.

Be careful of big claims

  • Be skeptical of promises of fast, dramatic results.
  • Check expiry dates and that the seal is intact when it arrives.
  • Store supplements in a cool, dry place with the lid closed.
  • Keep them out of reach of children.

Talk to a professional
